Renee Richards is a retired American ophthalmologist and former professional tennis player. Born Richard Raskind in 1934, she underwent gender reassignment surgery in 1975 and legally changed her name to Renee Richards. She won the 1977 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Women's 35 Clay Court Championships as a tennis player.
Also, she played in the women's singles and doubles events at the US Open. Richards was a vocal advocate for transgender rights and served as a medical consultant for the International Olympic Committee to help establish guidelines for transgender athletes. After retiring from tennis, she worked as an ophthalmologist in New York City.
