Regie Gibson is a poet, songwriter, author, workshop facilitator, and educator who has performed, taught and spoken at schools, colleges, theatres, and other venues all over the world, including Havana, Cuba. Regie and his art are featured in the New Line Cinema picture love jones, which is based on real-life events. Brother to the Night (A Blues for Nina) is poetry delivered by the film's lead, Larenz Tate, and featured on the film's soundtrack. In the film, Regie sang Hey Nappyhead alongside Kahil El Zabar, a world-renowned drummer, and composer who also composed the musical's score. He has worked with Gwendolyn Brooks, Roy Ayers, Fareed Haque, Kurt Vonnegut, David Amram, The Monks of the Drepong Gamong Monastery, members of the world-famous AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), Mos Def, Sterling Plumpp, Marc Smith, Mark Strand, Reg E. Gaines, Savion Glover, John Legend, and many other artists in musical genres such as World, Celtic, Jazz, and more. Regie has performed dramatic and lyrical interpretations of popular myths from throughout the world with the Chicago Mask Ensemble. While playing in Europe with the Sharnier Theater in Hanover, Frankfurt, Berlin, and the Literature Haus in Hamburg, Germany, he co-produced the piece The Mystery of Fire Bread. Classical flutist and Professor Janet Misurell-Mitchell dramatized and scored his original works of poetry, which were performed and directed by Eric Rosen for the Steppenwolf Theater's Words on a Fire show. Regie was a part of the award-winning Traffic Series at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater in 1999, when he adapted Kurt Vonnegut's work. Regie formed the LiteraryMusic Ensemble, a literary and musical arts ensemble that combines Middle Eastern, Contemporary American, and European classic music with the classic literary text. Regie's work has appeared in a variety of anthologies, publications, and journals, including The Iowa Review, Harvard Divinity Magazine, Poetry Magazine, Spoken Word Revolution (Source Books), The Good Men Project, and others. In 2001, he got the Golden Pen Award for his full-length book of poetry (EM Press). Regie was nominated for a Boston Grammy after being featured in the PBS Arts magazine Art Close-Up in 2005. Regie won the "Big Boat" international poetry competition in Monfalcone, Italy, in the spring of 2008. Regie holds an MFA in Poetry from New England College, and he continues to lead creative writing workshops, performances, and another literary curriculum for high schools and universities around the country.
