In 1946, he raced in a 1934 Ford at Opa-Locka Speedway in Miami, Florida. Farmer's career victories are estimated to be between 700 and 900, with the majority coming in the late 1950s and early 1960s. From 1953 until 1975, he competed in 36 NASCAR races. At smaller tracks, he won multiple titles.
From 1969 to 1971, he was the NASCAR National Late Model Sportsman champion three times in a row. In NASCAR's premier division, Farmer's best result was fourth in the 1972 Talladega 500 and the 1968 Middle Georgia 500 at Macon, Georgia. He only ran in a few Cup events since he preferred to compete in Late Model Sportsman.
