Raquel Salas Rivera Biography

Raquel Salas Rivera is a Puerto Rican poet and translator. Salas Rivera studied at the University of Puerto Rico, where they received a Bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature. They later earned an MFA in Poetry from New York University. In addition to their own poetry, Salas Rivera has translated works by poets including Julia de Burgos and Jack Spicer. Salas Rivera's poetry explores themes of colonialism, migration, and gender identity, often through a lens of social justice and activism. Their debut collection, "Caneca de anhelos turbios" (2011), was awarded the 2010-2011 Poetry Prize from the PEN Club of Puerto Rico, and their second collection, "O xólotl anahuac" (2015), was the winner of the 2014-2015 Fence Modern Poets Series Prize. In 2018, Salas Rivera was named the Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, the first Puerto Rican to hold the position. During their tenure as laureate, Salas Rivera worked to highlight the city's diverse communities and histories through poetry, as well as advocating for greater support for arts education and community programs.
