He joined the business after Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation Limited, which he co-founded and oversaw as president and co-CEO since 1982, was acquired by Newmont. The highest civilian accolade in the nation of Canada, membership in the Order of Canada, was also given to Lassonde. His charitable endeavors have included endowing the Lassonde Mineral Engineering Program and the Lassonde Institute at the University of Toronto as well as supporting academic facilities at the Ecole Polytechnique. Lassonde donated $13.25 million in 2006 to establish one of the biggest entrepreneur centers in the country. The Lassonde New Venture Development Center was one of the early programs that made up the Pierre Lassonde Entrepreneur Center. Additionally, the Pierre Lassonde Entrepreneur Center was given control over the Utah Entrepreneur Challenge, Opportunity Quest, Speaker Series, and Launch Pad. Students receive hands-on learning opportunities at the Pierre Lassonde Entrepreneur Center through a variety of different programs, preparing them to be tomorrow's inventive business leaders. Lassonde received an honorary doctorate in business from the University of Utah in May 2006.
