Philip Altbach was born in Chicago in 1941 and went to the University of Chicago for his education (AB, 1962; AM, 1963; Ph.D., 1966). He brought peace sign buttons into the United States from Britain as a college student in 1960.
Later, as a representative from the Student Peace Union (SPU), Altbach flew to England to speak with British peace groups, and upon his return, he persuaded the SPU to adopt the sign.
