Phil Venables Biography

Phil Venables is a British-American computer scientist and cybersecurity expert who served as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Google Cloud from 2020 to 2025, leading teams responsible for risk, security, compliance, and privacy. Previously, he was a Partner at Goldman Sachs for 20 years, serving as CISO, Chief Operational Risk Officer, and Board Director of Goldman Sachs Bank. His career also includes CISO roles at Deutsche Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, and Barclays Bank. Venables co-founded the Center for Internet Security and has advised on U.S. cybersecurity initiatives, including the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (2021–2025). He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of York and an M.S. in Computation and Cryptography from the University of Oxford. In 2025, he joined Ballistic Ventures as a Venture Partner and Warburg Pincus as a Senior Advisor, with a focus on cybersecurity investments.
