Phelim McAleer is an investigative journalist and filmmaker. He's made documentaries for CBC (Canada) and RTE (Ireland), as well as two feature-length films on his own. McAleer worked as a foreign journalist for the Financial Times in Eastern Europe before becoming a filmmaker. For the Economist, he also covered Romania and Bulgaria. He formerly worked for the Sunday Times in the United Kingdom, where he covered Ireland. In addition to Romania, he has worked as a filmmaker and journalist in Uganda, Madagascar, Bulgaria, Chile, Indonesia, Canada, and China. McAleer began his career as a reporter for the Crossmaglen Examiner, a small Armagh newspaper in Northern Ireland. The publication reported on events in the area, which was dubbed "Bandit Country" due to the severity of the IRA campaign there. McAleer later went to Belfast's Irish News. Before becoming night editor of the Irish News, Northern Ireland's top-selling daily newspaper, he worked as a journalist covering the Northern Ireland conflicts and peace process. In 2005, he co-produced The Search for Tristan's Mum, which aired on RTE 1, Ireland's national television channel. It highlighted the sad story of child Tristan Dowse, who was adopted at birth by an Irish couple and then abandoned two years later in an Indonesian orphanage. Input 2006, a showcase for the greatest programming from national public broadcasters from around the world, chose The Search for Tristan's Mum. It was chosen by specialists in the business and screened at Input 2006 in Taiwan in May. Not Evil Just Wrong, a film examining and criticizing contemporary fears about global warming, was produced and filmed by him in 2009. The film exposes the sad repercussions of the environmental movement's first victory, the DDT prohibition, which has led to the unnecessary deaths of more than 40 million children and adults in poor countries. McAleer also produced and directed Mine Your Own Business (2006), the first documentary to confront the environmental movement with challenging concerns. As a result, when the video was exhibited in the National Geographic auditorium in Washington, DC, 80 NGOs, including Greenpeace, demanded that it be banned. McAleer has been on a variety of foreign media outlets, including Fox News, CNN, and the BBC, and is a regular contributor to them. He's appeared on over 100 US and foreign radio programs, including Hugh Hewitt's and Dennis Miller's.
