Peter Staley was a closeted young bond trader in New York in 1987, working in an atmosphere he characterizes as "horrible and suffocating." He describes it as being like a locker room for a high school football team. Sexist, homophobic, and testosterone-fueled. To stay alive, you had to act the role. I didn't like how it made me feel, but being locked up was far worse. He kept his sexual orientation a secret at work, as well as his recent diagnosis with what was then known as Aids-related complicated. Staley's life was turned upside down when he was handed a flyer on his way to work, he claims. It's from Act Up, an Aids advocacy group, and he'd just passed by the group's first protest, fueled by rage over the US government's unwillingness to deliver life-saving medications. When he arrived at work, his coworkers were debating the same demonstration. They all deserve to die, in my opinion, since they took it up the sleeve. Staley remembers hearing this from the floor's chief trader. At my desk, I just sort of crumbled.
