Peter Salama Biography

Dr. Peter Salama is a medical doctor and epidemiologist who has dedicated his career to global health. He is currently the Executive Director of the Health Emergencies Programme at the World Health Organization (WHO), overseeing the organization's response to outbreaks and other health emergencies worldwide. Before joining WHO, Dr. Salama worked for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). He served as the Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa and as the Global Coordinator for Ebola, overseeing the organization's response to the 2014 outbreak in West Africa. Dr. Salama has also worked for the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He served as the Director of the Division of Global Health Protection for the Middle East and North Africa. He has been involved in responding to several disease outbreaks, including Ebola, Zika, and cholera, and has also worked on strengthening health systems, disease surveillance, and vaccine-preventable diseases. In addition to his work in global health, Dr. Salama is a professor of international health at Johns Hopkins University and has published numerous articles and book chapters on public health and international development topics. He has also been recognized for his contributions to global health, receiving awards from organizations such as the United Nations and the American Public Health Association. Dr. Salama holds a medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and a master's in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is also a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Epidemiology.
