Peter Max is a graphic designer and illustrator from Germany who is recognized for his use of psychedelic forms, color palettes, and spectra in his work. Initially, works in this style were displayed on posters and on the walls of college dorms across the United States. Max was then enthralled by new printing processes that enabled four-color reproduction on products.

Max's work was licensed by 72 firms after his breakthrough with a series of art clocks for General Electric. Max was featured on the covers of Life magazine, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and The Ed Sullivan Show in September 1969.
