Peter Kongstvedt Biography

Peter Kongstvedt, MD, FACP, is a nationally recognized specialist in the healthcare sector, with a focus on health insurance and managed care. Dr. Kongstvedt is a Senior Health Policy Faculty Member in the Department of Health Administration and Policy at George Mason University, where he teaches graduate courses on the Essentials of Health Insurance and Managed Health Care. He also advises health care executives on strategy, operations, and effective decision-making. He was appointed by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam in March of 2014. McAuliffe was appointed to the state's Board of Medical Assistance Services in 2016 and was reappointed by Governor Ralph Northam in 2018. Dr. Kongstvedt's diverse business experience stems from his work as an independent consultant, a partner at global consulting companies, a senior executive at a variety of health plans and insurers, and via public service. Dr. Kongstvedt's publications are utilized by more than 230 graduate and undergraduate health administration and policy programs, and he is the principal author and editor of the leading textbooks on health insurance and managed care. These publications include The Essentials of Managed Health Care, 6th Edition (2013) and Health Insurance and Managed Care: What They Are and How They Work, Fifth Edition, both published by Jones & Bartlett Learning (2019). Dr. Kongstvedt has consulted for and appeared on NBC's Today Show, CNN, PBS's Nightly Business Report, National Public Radio's All Things Considered, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Bloomberg News, and the Medical News Television Network as a health care industry thought leader and media-trained communicator.
