Peter Howitt is a Canadian economist renowned for pioneering endogenous growth theory. The Lyn Crost Professor of Social Sciences Emeritus at Brown University, he shared the 2025 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Philippe Aghion and Joel Mokyr for modeling “creative destruction”, the process where innovation disrupts and drives sustained economic growth. Howitt’s career began with a Ph.D.

from Northwestern University in 1971. He’s taught at the University of Western Ontario, Ohio State University, and Brown since 2000, focusing on macroeconomics, monetary policy, inflation dynamics, and the causes of unemployment.
