Peter Hotez Biography

Peter Hotez is the founding dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine and a professor at Baylor College of Medicine's Departments of Pediatrics and Molecular Virology and Microbiology. He is also the head of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, the director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, and a Rice University Baker Institute Fellow in Disease and Poverty. Hotez was the founding editor-in-chief of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases and previously served as president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He has been a member and leader of a variety of professional organizations, including the National Academy of Medicine (previously the Institute of Medicine). He co-founded the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases in 2006 as part of the Clinton Global Initiative to offer crucial medications to more than 450 million people. Hotez was chosen as the US Science Envoy by the White House in 2015.
