Peter Ashton is a British botanist who has significantly contributed to forestry and the study of tropical forests. Ashton has devoted his professional life to the preservation and sustainable use of tropical forests. He held the prestigious position of Charles Bullard Professor of Forestry at Harvard University and was the director of the Arnold Arboretum from 1978 to 1987.
Ashton began his academic career at the University of Cambridge, where he earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. He has extensively researched tropical forests throughout his career, focusing on conservation and sustainable practices. One of his notable achievements was his instrumental role in developing the Forest Dynamic Plots network, a project initiated by the Center for Tropical Forest Science.
