Pete Docter's passion for animation began at a young age when he started creating his own flip books, sparking his love for illustration. After completing his education at John F. Kennedy High School, Docter enrolled at the University of Minnesota, where he explored philosophy and art.
During this time, he showcased his talent by winning a Student Academy Award for his hand-drawn story titled Next Door. This charming tale featured an old grumpy character with a square head and an overly cheerful neighborhood girl, bearing similarities to his later work on the film Up.
