Perry was born and reared in the Napa Valley, and his grandparents were the original proprietors of the French Laundry, the Yountville restaurant made famous by current owner Thomas Keller. Perry would assist his grandma to prepare croutons, roasting bell peppers, and cutting parsley in her kitchen when he was four years old.
His career would be shaped by this babysitting job. At the age of 15, Perry began working as a Pastry Chef at a local neighborhood restaurant. Perry relocated to Anderson Valley three years later to work at the Boonville Hotel. Perry learned to cook seasonally with what the restaurant's two-acre vegetable garden had to provide.
