Sallie W. (Penny) Chisholm is a highly esteemed U.S. biological oceanographer renowned for her expertise in the ecology and evolution of ocean microbes. Since joining the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1976, Chisholm has made significant contributions to the field.
Her research has focused specifically on the ecology of marine phytoplankton, with a particular emphasis on applying flow cytometry to study environmental samples. Collaborating with esteemed scientists such as R.J. Olson and H.M. Sosik, Chisholm discovered that small plankton, notably Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, play a much more significant role in marine productivity than previously realized.
