Francine Hurd Barker, a Washington, D.C. native, received the nickname Peaches as a youngster because of her polite demeanor. She sang in neighborhood ensembles and was the main vocalist for the Keynotes while she was in her teens. The Darlettes, her own band, auditioned for and were signed to Date Records in the D.C.
region, where their name was altered to the Sweet Things. Herb Fame, who was born Herbert Feemster on October 1, 1942, in Washington, D.C., began singing in church at the age of seven and continued to perform in neighborhood groups throughout his life. Herb started working at a record store after graduating from high school.
