Tracy has been fascinated by vehicles since he was a child, and in 1985, at the age of 16, he became the youngest ever Canadian Formula Ford Champion. Tracy rose through the ranks of racing in the United States, winning the 1990 Indy Lights Championship and setting a record with nine victories.
He raced in his first Champcar event the next year at Long Beach, California, and joined Penske Racing as a test driver in the middle of the season.
