Paul began his work with the corporate communications company Maritz after graduating with a master's degree from Goldsmiths' College in London, before helping to create shoots magazine in 1990. Paul returned to shooting and became editor in 1994 after a stint in commercial production. During his tenure, subscriptions tripled.
He took over as Leo Burnett's international head of creative resources in Chicago from Donald Gunn in 1998. Paul was in charge of the agency's Great Commercials intranet site and its quarterly creative councils, known as the Global Product Committee, and reported to Michael Conrad.
