On May 1, 2014, Paul Gionfriddo was chosen as President and CEO of Mental Health America. Over the course of his thirty-year career, he has held a range of health and mental-health-related roles. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius named him to the 12-member National Advisory Council of the SAMHSA Center for Mental Health Services for a four-year term in 2013. Prior to joining MHA, he worked as a consultant, speaker, and writer, as well as the creator of Our Health Policy Matters, a prominent weekly health policy blog. His piece, How I Helped Create a Flawed Mental Health System That's Failed Millions – And My Son, was published in the September 2012 edition of Health Affairs as the Narrative Matters essay (and was the most-read article), and it was also featured in the Washington Post in October 2012. The full-length version of the tale was published as a book in the fall of 2014 by Columbia University Press, titled Losing Tim: How Our Health and Education Systems Failed My Son with Schizophrenia.
