In 1982, two neighbors, Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley Baekgaard founded Vera Bradley, which quickly became an internationally recognized brand. Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Patricia Miller started the company with five hundred dollars, working out of Miller's garage and the company expanded into a multi-million dollar company in three years.
Miller and Baekgaard were awarded Entrepreneur of the Year in 1987. Vera Bradley designs handbags, travel bags and accessories, eyewear, rolling luggage, and paper and gift items. In 2005, Miller took a leave of absence from Vera Bradley to serve as Indiana’s first Secretary of Commerce for the State of Indiana and CEO of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.
