The head coach of the Bristol Bears rugby team is Pat Lam. He attended St Peter's College in Grafton and led the New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby team during his playing career. Before coming to England, he played loose forward for Auckland, North Harbour, and Crusaders before joining Newcastle Falcons.
He made 22 appearances in his debut season with Newcastle, helping them win the Premiership in 1997-98. After that victory, he went on to Northampton Saints, with whom he won the Heineken Cup in 1999–2000. Lam returned to the Newcastle Falcons for the 2001–02 season, where he spent a year before retiring.
