Pat Lam Biography

The head coach of the Bristol Bears rugby team is Pat Lam. He attended St Peter's College in Grafton and led the New Zealand Secondary Schools rugby team during his playing career. Before coming to England, he played loose forward for Auckland, North Harbour, and Crusaders before joining Newcastle Falcons. He made 22 appearances in his debut season with Newcastle, helping them win the Premiership in 1997-98. After that victory, he went on to Northampton Saints, with whom he won the Heineken Cup in 1999–2000. Lam returned to the Newcastle Falcons for the 2001–02 season, where he spent a year before retiring. Lam only played one game for the All Blacks in 1992, a non-test match against Sydney (as All Black no. 928). Following making his debut for Samoa in 1991, he went on to captain the team and participate in three World Cups before retiring from international rugby after the 1999 tournament. Samoa surprised everyone by reaching the quarter-finals in 1991 and 1995. Lam has also represented the Barbarians in the past. He scored a try as a substitute against England in 2002. Lam captained the squad to victory over Wales in his second game for the team, scoring another try in what would be his final game before retiring. Lam's first coaching role was with Scotland in the 2003 Rugby World Cup as an assistant coach. From 2004 until 2008, he was the head coach of Auckland. He also coached the Pacific Islanders in 2006 during his time in Auckland. From 2009 until 2012, he was the head coach of the Blues, a Super Rugby side. On the team's 2012 trip, he worked with Samoa. With its victory, Samoa climbed to eighth place in the IRB rankings, securing a spot in the 2015 Rugby World Cup's second tier. Prior to the 2013-14 season, Lam was named head coach of Connacht Rugby, an Irish Pro12 team. Connacht won their first major trophy, the 2015–16 Pro12, on May 28, 2016, with a 20–10 victory against Leinster in the final.
