About Oribe

Oribe Biography

Irving Penn, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritz, Mert & Marcus, Steven Klein, and many more have entrusted Oribe with their hair. His collaborations with models Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and celebrities Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Penelope Cruz, and Jessica Biel have graced the covers and pages of the world's most prestigious magazines, as well as the airwaves of the world's most popular television stations. And, despite work appearing in Vogue, Elle, Allure, W, V, and Pop magazines this year, Oribe's career has yet to reach its pinnacle. Oribe began a five-year partnership with photographer Steven Meisel and makeup artist Francois Nars in the late 1970s and early 1980s in New York's fashion scene. The three artists collaborated closely with young models Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, and Naomi Campbell to create a collaboration that characterized an era, paving the path for the modern-day supermodel. Oribe's work at the time is credited for propelling the fashion industry forward by putting hairstyles to the forefront of fashion photography. Oribe created the Oribe Agency, which handled future beauty giants like Laura Mercier, Nars, Kevin Mancuso, Bobbi Brown, Serge Normant, Danilo, and Jimmy Paul, and built his first salon, Oribe at Parachute, in 1987. In the early 1990s, he began a long-term partnership with his friend and mentor Gianni Versace, resulting in imagery that reflected their mutual love of Miami extravagance. Oribe debuted his opulent salon at Elizabeth Arden on Fifth Avenue in 1991. With the classic luxury of Versace's South Beach home and a location unlike any other on the planet, it was an unrivaled salon space. The Metropolitan Museum of Art commissioned Oribe to create raffia and papier-mâché hairpieces for the reopening of the Costume Institute Galleries in 1992, a sculptural command perfectly suited to his artistic hand. Oribe worked on the wigs for months, and they were presented on mannequins made to seem like Christy Turlington. Around this time, a New York Times story highlighted that runway hair, which had previously been used primarily to show off garments, had become a major issue in its own right. The occasion for their celebration was a Chanel show when Oribe's intentionally tousled hairstyles garnered equal attention as the designs. Oribe told the New York Times that all Karl Lagerfeld instructed him to do was make the females feel attractive. That is exactly what they did. Oribe shifts his attention from fashion to the new faces of fashion in 1997. Oribe returned to Miami to work with Jennifer Lopez, the music industry's newest face. Lopez contacted Oribe after seeing his name in fashion publications as a youngster and asked him to style her for the cover of her album, On the 6. Oribe continues to collaborate with Lopez, having accompanied her on her rapid rise and assisting in the development of the JLO character. Throughout the 1990s, Oribe had a modest salon in his hometown of Miami, where he styled the hair of residents and celebrities visiting for business or pleasure. But, with a burgeoning business, he took the risky step of permanently relocating to Miami in 2003, closing the doors of his Fifth Avenue salon. Oribe's new Miami salon first debuted on New Year's Eve in 2004 and is still open today. In 2008, Oribe combined his thirty-year hairdressing experience with his passion for elegance and individual beauty to create the line of products he had always imagined: a collection of grounded, old-world hairstyling products infused with cutting-edge technology and the best ingredients. The end result is a refined collection that caters to the most discerning customers: Oribe, his clients, peers, and anybody who values elegance, high performance, handcraftsmanship, and luxury. Oribe's labor and invention are still going strong today. He travels regularly around the United States and Europe, continuing to set hairstyle trends and generating work for magazine covers and pages around the world.
