Oguchi Onyewu is an American soccer player who is now a free agent as a central defender. He has represented France, Belgium, England, Italy, the Netherlands, and Portugal in football. Since Alexi Lalas won the honor in 1995, he is the first male defender to win the US Soccer Athlete of the Year award.
Onyewu started and played the whole 90 minutes of the United States' opening World Cup group match against England on June 12. He made his second start against Slovenia in the second group match on June 18 but was substituted out in the 80th minute.
