Nikole Hannah-Jones is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and author recognized for her coverage of civil rights, racial injustice, and segregation in the United States. She received a B.A. in history and African-American studies from the University of Notre Dame and an M.A. in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her journalism career started at local newspapers, followed by positions at ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine, where she joined as a staff writer in 2015. She developed The 1619 Project, which reframes U.S. history by centering the arrival of enslaved Africans in 1619 and its lasting effects. The project has since evolved into a bestselling book, Hulu docuseries, and educational resources, drawing both praise and debate. Hannah-Jones received the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary and a 2017 MacArthur "Genius" Grant. She is the Knight Chair in Race and Journalism at Howard University, founding director of the Center for Journalism & Democracy, and co-founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting.
