Nassim Assefi Biography

Nassim Assefi, a doctor, writer, creative curator, civic activist, and TEDGlobal Fellow, is a doctor, novelist, creative curator, civic activist, and TEDGlobal Fellow. She works as an internist focusing on global women's health in the United States, caring for disadvantaged urban patients (including torture evaluations of immigrants seeking political asylum), and in low-income and post-conflict countries, tackling maternal mortality (most recently in Afghanistan). Aria (Harcourt, 2007; 5 international translations, current audiobook) and Say I Am You (Harcourt, 2007; 5 foreign translations, recent audiobook) are her works (forthcoming). She advises a variety of non-profits and businesses, including Hedgebrook and TEDMED. From a TEDGlobal session to launching TEDxRainier, holding a Jeffersonian dinner party on the future of the book to organizing retreats for the extremely creative, has organized numerous events and experiences. She's a second-generation Iranian-American, a bridge-builder, and a global nomad who's visited over 50 countries and speaks five languages. A Jack Straw Writing Fellowship, a Woman of Courage award from the University of Washington, Feminist Press' Top 40 Under 40 Feminist, and being named one of Seattle Metropolitan Magazine's finest doctors are among her recent accolades. She earned her bachelor's degree from Wellesley College and her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine.
