Nando Parrado tells the incredible story of how he and 15 of his comrades survived 72 days in the freezing Andes Mountains after their jet crashed over 30 years ago. It is still considered one of the greatest survival stories of all time. Nando and his Uruguayan rugby teammates were obliged to push themselves physically and mentally from the time the plane crashed on October 13, 1972, until their rescue on December 22. Nando got obsessed with living after waking up from a concussion to discover that his mother had died on impact and his sister was near death. He became a hero after he and teammate Roberto Canessa traveled for ten days to find their redemption. Nando began working with Piers Paul Read, the author picked by the survivors to write the best-selling book Alive, shortly after the 16 survivors were rescued. Nando likes racing motorbikes, sports cars, stock cars, and boats in his leisure time. Nando was part of a squad of drivers who raced standard Peugeots across the Sahara in 1991. The journey took 28 days and covered 8,500 kilometers from Morocco to Tunisia. Nando is a native of Montevideo, Uruguay, and a graduate of the Irish Christian Brothers' Stella Maris College. He also went to secondary school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as part of a study abroad program in the United States. Nando is a multilingual traveler who speaks five languages.
