About Nancy Sinatra

Nancy Sinatra Biography

Nancy Sinatra was born in the summer of 1940, while her father, Frank Sinatra, was performing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra; as the daughter of show business royalty, Nancy grew up in the limelight, and in 1957, she made her first television appearance alongside her father. Nancy didn't take long to develop her own aspirations as a performer, having studied music, dancing, and voice throughout her childhood, and in 1960 she made her professional debut on a television special hosted by her father and featuring guest star Elvis Presley, who was then fresh out of the Army. Nancy was keen to get into music after performing in a number of films and guest starring on episodic television, and she secured a deal with her father's record label, Reprise. Her first big record, 1966's These Boots Are Made for Walkin', demonstrated that she has the aptitude and moxie to succeed without the assistance of her father. These Boots Are Made for Walkin' was an instant and unstoppable hit, and took the tuff girl posturing of the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes to a whole new level, sounding both sexy and defiant, and belting out a definitive tough-chick lyric over a brassy arrangement by Bill Strange (and with the cream of L.A.'s session players behind her). Nancy also collaborated with her father on the hit track Somethin' Stupid, which charted at number one in 1967. Lee Hazlewood, who went on to become a cult legend in his own right and recorded a number of memorable duets with Nancy, including Sand, Summer Wine, and the one-of-a-kind epic Some Velvet Morning, produced the majority of Nancy's singles. Nancy solidified her bad girl image in 1966, co-starring alongside Peter Fonda in The Wild Angels, a Roger Corman picture that helped kick off the biker film craze of the 1960s and early 1970s; she later starred alongside Elvis Presley in the 1968 film Speedway. Nancy continued to record into the early 1970s, but after marrying dancer Hugh Lambert in 1970 (after a brief marriage to British singer and actor Tommy Sands ended in 1965), she devoted the majority of her time to her new life as a wife and mother, as well as working with a number of charitable causes. She wrote Frank Sinatra: My Father in 1985 and got increasingly involved in her family's activities; she followed up with a second book on Sinatra in 1998 and now manages the Sinatra Family website. Nancy returned to the studio in 1995 with One More Time, a country-flavored album, and she helped advertise it by posing for a sensual photo shoot in Playboy magazine. In support of the album, Nancy embarked on a concert tour, and in 2003, she teamed up with Hazlewood to create Nancy & Lee 3, which was regretfully not released in the United States. At the urging of longtime fan Morrissey, Nancy Sinatra returned to the studio soon after, and in the fall of 2004, she released a new disc simply titled Nancy Sinatra, an ambitious set that featured contributions from members of U2, Pulp, Calexico, Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and other contemporary rock performers. Nancy continued to perform live after the release of the album, including a memorable appearance at Little Steven's International Underground Garage Rock Festival in 2004, where she performed songs from her new album as well as These Boots Are Made for Walkin with an all-star band (including a horn section) and dozens of frugging go-go dancers.
