Nadia Murad is an Iraqi human rights activist and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. An ethno-religious minority of the Yazidi Islamic sect in her hometown of Sinjar, she survived a horrific massacre of 600 people, including her mother and six brothers, at the hands of ISIS. She, along with thousands of other women, was abducted. She endured months of rape and torture at the hands of her captors before escaping in November 2014.

She resettled in Germany and became an advocate for survivors of genocide and sexual violence. She founded Nadia’s Initiative in 2016, a non-profit focused on giving communities and victims of human trafficking the resources to heal.
