Morris Dees Biography

A non-profit group dedicated to lawsuits involving hate-motivated crimes, civil rights violations and domestic terrorism known as Southern Poverty Law Center was co-founder by Morris Dees, a diversity and Civil rights speaker. Dees and his colleagues have successfully fought and taken down a series of hate groups, including the Ku Klux Klan and Aryan Nation. They also bagged huge financial, criminal and civil punishments against them. As a strong advocate of education about the civil rights movement and civil rights, Morris Dees was involved in the creation of the Civil Rights Memorial in Mobile, Alabama. In 1987, Dees was named the Trial Lawyer of the Year for his efforts as an activist and attorney by the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice and in 1990, he received the National Education Association's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Award. Dees received the ABA Medal which recognizes outstanding service by a lawyer to the cause of American jurisprudence in 2012. It is the highest award from the American Bar Association.
