Dr. Mona Hanna is a prominent Iraqi-American pediatrician, public health advocate, scientist, professor, and author. Daughter of Iraqi immigrants who fled repression, she was born in England and raised in Michigan. She earned her medical degree and Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Dr. Hanna gained international recognition in 2015 for exposing the Flint water crisis. As a pediatrician in Flint, Michigan, she analyzed data showing elevated blood lead levels in children after the city switched its water source. Despite official denials, her research and public advocacy forced acknowledgment of the lead contamination crisis, sparking national outrage and recovery efforts. She serves as the Associate Dean for Public Health and the C.S. Mott Endowed Professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and founded the Pediatric Public Health Initiative. Her bestselling book, “What the Eyes Don’t See” (2018), details the crisis and was named a New York Times notable book. Honored as one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and a USA Today Woman of the Century, she continues advocating for children’s health, environmental justice, and equity through programs like Rx Kids.
