Missy Testerman works as a K–8 educator and English-as-a-Second-Language specialist at Rogersville City School in rural Tennessee. She began her teaching career with first and second grade classes until she obtained her ESL endorsement through Tennessee’s “Grow Your Own” program. She currently leads the ESL program at the district while providing support to multilingual students and guidance to her teaching colleagues.

Missy received the National Teacher of the Year award in April 2024 which made her the first Tennessee winner since 1988 because she established connections between established local families and new immigrant communities. Through culturally responsive curriculum and community engagement she helps students develop language interpretation skills for their families and advocacy skills for their community.
