Milan Kundera is the most well-known living novelist in the Czech Republic and one of the most well-known authors in the world. He was born in Czechoslovakia and has lived in exile in France since 1975, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1981.
He considers himself a French author and believes that his work should be examined as such and categorized as such in bookstores. The Unbearable Lightness of Being is Kundera's best-known masterpiece. His writings were prohibited by Czechoslovakia's Communist dictatorship until the Velvet Revolution of 1989 when the regime fell. He keeps a low profile and rarely speaks to the press.
