He got a Bachelor of Music in Composition from The North Carolina School of Arts (NCSA) in 1994 as a recipient of The Vittorio Giannini Award for Composition.
From 1996 to 2000, he held a fellowship at The Center For Computer Music and taught courses in music composition, theory, ear-training, keyboard skills, and music appreciation at Brooklyn College, where he got his Masters of Music in Composition in 1998. From 1995 through 1999, Kinney served as a musical accompanist at The Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance.
