Michael Jensen was born in Rochester, Minnesota, in the United States on November 30, 1939. In 1962, he graduated from Macalester College with a bachelor's degree in economics. He earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D.
in business administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he worked with Professor Merton Miller (1990 co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics). Jensen taught finance and business administration at the University of Rochester's William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration from 1967 until 1988.
