Figgis grew up in Africa after being born in Carlisle. His initial love was music, and he was a member of Bryan Ferry's first band, playing keyboards. He made his feature film debut with the low-budget Stormy Monday in 1988, after working in theatre (he was a musician and performer in the experimental ensemble The People Show).
The picture established him as a director capable of eliciting fascinating performances from well-known Hollywood stars. In the 1990s, he created a breakthrough in America with the gritty thriller Internal Affairs, which helped to resurrect Richard Gere's career. Mr.
