Michelle Singletary Biography

Michelle Singletary is an American journalist and personal finance columnist for The Washington Post, where her award-winning column, "The Color of Money," appears twice weekly and is syndicated in over 100 newspapers. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, she was raised by her grandmother, "Big Mama," whose frugal financial wisdom shaped Singletary’s practical approach to money management. She graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, and earned a master’s degree in business and management from Johns Hopkins University.

Singletary has authored four books: “Spend Well, Live Rich” (2004), “Your Money and Your Man” (2006), “The 21-Day Financial Fast” (2014), and “What to Do With Your Money When Crisis Hits” (2021). Her work emphasizes budgeting, debt reduction, and financial literacy. In 2021, she won a Gerald Loeb Award for her series "Sincerely, Michelle," addressing race and wealth disparities, and in 2022, she received the Loeb Lifetime Achievement Award. She’s also been honored with the 2020 Eugene Meyer Award from The Washington Post and the 2021 National Association of Black Journalists award for commentary.

Singletary is a frequent media contributor who has appeared on NPR, CNN, and NBC's Today Show and hosted Singletary Says on TV One (2006-2008). She founded Prosperity Partners Ministry at First Baptist Church of Glenarden, where she and her husband, Kevin, teach financial literacy, including to incarcerated individuals in Maryland prisons.
