Michelle Borkin Biography

Michelle Borkin's 3-D imaging research employs astronomical techniques to aid surgeons in visualizing patients' hearts. Michelle earned a B.A. in Astronomy & Astrophysics and Physics from Harvard University in 2006. Under the direction of Alyssa Goodman and Michael Halle, she authored her undergraduate junior and senior theses on the application of medical imaging tools to astronomical data. She continued this work at the IIC for the following two years as part of the Astronomical Medicine initiative. She collaborated with the creators of visualization tools such as 3D Slicer to increase their efficacy in a variety of scientific fields (including astronomy). She also worked on star formation studies with the COMPLETE Team at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). Her research interests included researching young star outflows and developing segmentation algorithms. She's also used the CfA 1.2 m telescope, the Haystack Radio Telescope, the Green Bank Radio Telescope, and the MMT for observations. Michelle is now earning a Ph.D. in Applied Physics at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). She is currently working on two projects: the Multiscale Hemodynamics Project, which focuses on 3D visualization and analysis of hemodynamic simulation data in conjunction with real medical imaging data, and the Astronomical Medicine Project, which focuses on interdisciplinary 3D visualization techniques and the creation of new visualizations to advance both fields. Michelle received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) and a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship in 2010. TED named her a TEDGlobal 2009 Fellow, and SEED Magazine named her one of their Revolutionary Minds (The Re-visionaries). She began her Ph.D. studies at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2008. She was named a TED Fellow in 2009 and received a research scholarship from the National Science Foundation.
