Michele Simon is a public health attorney who focuses on legal techniques to oppose corporate activities that endanger public health. Since 1996, Simon has been studying and writing about the food business and food politics. She worked as the research and policy director for Marin Institute (now Alcohol Justice), an alcohol industry watchdog group headquartered in Northern California, for 4.5 years. Her ground-breaking 2007 study on alcoholic energy drinks prompted the federal government to enact legislation banning hazardous beverages. In 2006, Nation Books released her debut book, Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back. Professor Marion Nestle of New York University has made the book mandatory reading for her nutrition students, calling it "excellent." Simon is a skilled and entertaining speaker who gives talks on business strategies and policy solutions all around the world. She graduated from Yale University with a master's degree in public health and from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law with a law degree. Simon received the Community Award from the National Association of Nutrition Professionals and the Award of Excellence from the Nutritional Therapy Association in 2013.
