Michael Richards had already established a solid career as a comic actor before landing the role in 1989. After graduating college Richards began performing in comedy clubs. He had worked the stand-up circuit for less than a year when he was asked by ABC to appear in their new sketch series Fridays.

It took Richards awhile to develop his alter ego but once he did the results were dazzling earning Richards a trio of Emmys for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
