He was born on June 30, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland, his full name Michael Fred Phelps II. He was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at a young age, but found focus and direction from swimming, which was encouraged by his mother and sisters. He began training seriously by coach Bob Bowman at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and it did not take long for his talent to show. Over the next four Olympics, Michael was dominant in the sport, winning 28 medals, with 23 of those being gold, in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. He broke Mark Spitz's record by winning eight gold medals in a single Games at Beijing. After retiring in 2016, he became the subject of a public scrutiny of personal challenges, including depression and substance abuse of which he was openly ashamed. This took him to found the Michael Phelps Foundation with a purpose of promoting water safety and mental health awareness and to work with other organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. His partnerships include work with the U.S. Olympic Committee and mental health strategies, which illustrate his effort to contribute.
