Michael McFaul is an American academic, diplomat, and author specializing in Russian politics and U.S. foreign policy. Raised in Butte and Bozeman, he excelled in high school debate before earning a B.A. and M.A. in international relations and Slavic languages from Stanford University, followed by a D.Phil. from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.
A Stanford professor of political science since 1995, he has directed the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. He serves as the Peter and Helen Bing Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and as director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
