Michael L. Lomax Biography

Dr. Michael L. Lomax has been the president and CEO of UNCF since 2004, the nation's largest private provider of scholarships and other educational support to African American students, and a leading advocate for college readiness, preparing students for college success from pre-school to high school. UNCF has raised $2.3 billion during his tenure and assisted over 92,000 students in obtaining college degrees and launching professions. UNCF's efforts annually enable 60,000 students to attend one of UNCF's 37 historically black schools and institutions using UNCF scholarships (HBCUs). Lomax has fought to ensure that African Americans and other people of color have access to education. Lomax was president of Dillard University in New Orleans and a literature professor at UNCF member Morehouse and Spelman Colleges before joining UNCF. He was also the first African American to be elected chairman of the Fulton County Commission in Atlanta. Lomax is in charge of UNCF's 400 scholarship programs, which give 10,000 scholarships totaling more than $100 million each year. In addition, he established the UNCF Institute for Capacity Building, which assists UNCF's 37 member historically black colleges and institutions in becoming stronger, more successful, and self-sustaining. UNCF has campaigned for college preparation and education reform through collaborations with reform-minded leaders and groups under Lomax's leadership. Teach For America and the KIPP Foundation are both on his board of directors. He also served on the mayoral education transition team in Washington, DC, as well as the search committee for a new DC school chancellor. Dr. Lomax is a member of the boards of the Museum of African American History and Culture at the Smithsonian Institution and the Studio Museum in Harlem. The National Black Arts Festival was created by him.
