Boren Fellow of the National Security Education Program of the United States Department of Defense in 1995 and spent a year in Vietnam researching guerrilla warfare. Following the conclusion of the war in Vietnam in 1989, Michael Keane was one of the first Americans to enter the country, accompanying Vietnamese soldiers into Cambodia to combat the Khmer Rouge.
