Michael Keane Biography

Michael Keane is a Pacific Council on International Policy National Security Fellow and an assistant professor at the University of Southern California, where he teaches a popular strategy seminar. He has worked as a consultant for a variety of companies and government agencies, including Citibank and the World Bank. Michael Keane was named a David L. Boren Fellow of the National Security Education Program of the United States Department of Defense in 1995 and spent a year in Vietnam researching guerrilla warfare. Following the conclusion of the war in Vietnam in 1989, Michael Keane was one of the first Americans to enter the country, accompanying Vietnamese soldiers into Cambodia to combat the Khmer Rouge. Keane joined the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army in Iraq in December 2003. He was embedded at ISAF HQ in Kabul, Afghanistan, in January 2010. He's also attended the yearly Current Strategy Forum at the US Naval War College. Michael Keane's military policy commentary has appeared on CNN, National Public Radio, and the Los Angeles Times. Following the invasion of Iraq by the United States in 2003, his remarks correctly anticipated that what appeared to be a fast triumph would rapidly descend into a tough guerilla struggle. Michael Keane, the National Security Analyst for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, is a popular speaker for conventions and business groups, where he shares inspirational combat leadership instances. The Dictionary of Modern Strategy and Tactics was written by Keane (2005, Naval Institute Press). His latest book, The Good War, on the Afghan struggle, will be released in the fall of 2011. Michael Keane has a JD from the University of Texas School of Law, an MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago, and a BA in Economics from USC.
