Michael Ghiglieri Biography

Michael P. Ghiglieri grew up in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, as the great-grandson of a Forty-niner, served in the US Army as a platoon sergeant during the Vietnam War and received his Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California at Davis in 1979 for his groundbreaking research on wild chimps in Uganda's Kiable Forest. He has directed several semesters-over-seas centers focusing on sustainable resource management (in Kenya, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Palau, Far North Queensland, and Vancouver Island) and has worked as a wilderness river guide and EMT, in addition to teaching university courses in primate behavior and ecology and human evolution and ecology. He has led over 660 commercial whitewater expeditions and treks in Ethiopia, Java, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Rwanda, Sumatra, Tanzania, Turkey, and the United States since 1974. There have been approximately 140 2-week rowing or paddling expeditions in the Grand Canyon and over 43,000 miles of river total, as well as a few as an NPS ranger in the Canyon and many Kilimanjaro ascents. Ghiglieri is a volunteer with the Coconino County Sheriff Department's search and rescue squad with his wife, Susan, and has three children. He has written documentary scripts and six other books (two on wild chimpanzees) and is happily married with three children. East of the Moon's Mountains, Canyon, The Dark Side of Man: Tracing the Origins of Male Violence, Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon, and First Through Grand Canyon are just a few of his publications.
