Michael P. Ghiglieri grew up in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, as the great-grandson of a Forty-niner, served in the US Army as a platoon sergeant during the Vietnam War and received his Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of California at Davis in 1979 for his groundbreaking research on wild chimps in Uganda's Kiable Forest.
He has directed several semesters-over-seas centers focusing on sustainable resource management (in Kenya, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Palau, Far North Queensland, and Vancouver Island) and has worked as a wilderness river guide and EMT, in addition to teaching university courses in primate behavior and ecology and human evolution and ecology.
