About Michael D. Eisner
Michael D. Eisner Biography
Based on his experiences as the CEO of Disney and the Founder of The Tornante Company, a fund that invests in and develops media and entertainment firms, Michael Eisner teaches audiences how to build corporate creativity and strategically engage in innovation. Mr. Eisner, a Fortune 500 CEO and entrepreneur, understands that even huge multinational corporations can adapt to new markets, economies, and technology. He not only encourages business innovation via his statements, but he also establishes criteria for effective implementation, such as brand building, strategic alliances, and employee work teams. In 1984, Eisner became Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. He revived and remade Disney into a full-fledged entertainment company throughout his twenty-one years at the helm. The business began implementing a series of innovative development initiatives under his leadership, which resulted in yearly revenues growing from $1.7 billion to moreover $30 billion. Michael Eisner is still a pioneer in the entertainment industry. Vuguru, a studio that creates unique content for the Internet, portable media devices, and cellphones, was founded by his investment firm Tornante. Disney animation had a rebirth under his leadership, with films such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. Disney also became a leader in live-action films with films like Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Three Men and a Baby, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Pretty Woman, The Sixth Sense, Pearl Harbor, Signs, and Pirates of the Caribbean; produced hit TV shows like Golden Girls, Home Improvement, Lost, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Desperate Housewives; and opened Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disney Sea, and Honolulu Disney World. He started his career at ABC, where he oversaw Daytime and Children's programming, including All My Children, One Life to Live, ABC Afterschool Specials, and Scholastic's School House Rock. He rose to Senior Vice President of Prime Time Production and Development, helping to propel the network from third to first place with shows like Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Welcome Back, Kotter, Barney Miller, Starsky and Hutch, and Mod Squad, as well as co-inventing the concept of original television movies (The Movie of the Week) and the Novel and Mini-Series format. Mr. Eisner became President of Paramount Pictures in 1977, and with films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Star Trek, Reds, Heaven Can Wait, Ordinary People, Flash Dance, Footloose, and Terms of Endearment, he led the studio to number one in box office and profitability. Working Together: Why Great Relationships Succeed, which Eisner co-authored with Aaron R. Cohen, was motivated by Eisner's enthusiasm for collaboration and knowledge of great partnerships. Eisner gives us an intimate and profoundly personal look into some of the most successful business partnerships in this vital book for businessmen everywhere, revealing what makes them tick and giving unusual wisdom and unexpected ideas. He illuminates these astonishingly long-lasting and fulfilling relationships by weaving 10 distinct stories — from investing gurus to entertainment moguls, from fashion designers to big-box retailers — into a broader storey about the actual nature of success in life and business. Work in Progress, co-authored with Tony Schwartz, is about Eisner's participation in the entertainment business; and Camp, about the life lessons learned from leading a canoe excursion or sitting around a campfire, is about Eisner's involvement in the entertainment industry. Michael was born in New York on March 7, 1942, and received his B.A. in English literature and drama from Lawrenceville School in 1960 and Denison University in 1964. He is a member of the boards of the California Institute of the Arts, Denison University, the American Hospital of Paris Foundation, the Aspen Institute, the Dean's Council of the Yale School of Architecture, the Michael D. Eisner School of Education, the Eisner Pediatric and Family Medical Center, and The Eisner Foundation, which he founded and funds with his wife Jane.
