Michael Cooper Biography

Michael Cooper is a former NBA player who now coaches in the NBA Development League. He played college football at the University of New Mexico, where he was selected first-team All-Western Athletic Conference and led his team to the WAC title in his senior year. The Los Angeles Lakers selected him in the 1978 NBA Draft. He spent his entire NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he was selected to eight NBA All-Defense Teams. He was a part of five Lakers championship teams and received the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1987. Following his playing career, he worked as an assistant to Lakers general manager Jerry West, then as an assistant coach for the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, eventually becoming the team's head coach. Cooper was selected WNBA Coach of the Year in 2000. Cooper just took over as head coach of the NBA Development League's Albuquerque Thunderbirds.
