Michael Chernow began his professional restaurant career as a delivery boy on New York City's Upper East Side when he was a teenager. Michael began working behind the bar at Life, a prominent nightclub on Bleecker Street, in 1996, and swiftly rose through the ranks to become the youngest bartender on staff, learning from the bottom up.
Michael went on to create Woo Lae Oak on Mercer Street in New York City after working for two years at both Life in New York and its East Hampton sibling club, The Tavern. In 2001, Michael relocated to Los Angeles, where he worked at Woo Lae Oak's first La Cienega Boulevard branch.
